Overview Of The Motorola SB6121:
This is the Motorola SB6121 review on the latest Motorola modem that was designed to replace the highly successful SB6120. The SB6120 was an awesome product but unfortunately like all technology products, they get dated and are replaced as new technology comes along.
The Motorola engineers designed the SB6121 to harness the power of DOCSIS® 3.0 so that you can optimally utilize data rates of more than 100 Mbps on both directions through the use of channel bonding of up to four channels on both upstream and downstream channels. It is backward compatible to DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 1.x and 2.0 and supports IPv4 and IPv6.
What this means in simple terms is that with the Motorola SB6121 you get excellent user experience when you are using heavy bandwidth applications like multimedia applications and online games compared to what you may previously have experienced.
What is DOCSIS and how does it help?:
DOCSIS is the acronym for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification and the DOCSIS 3.0 specification was released in August 2006 by Cablelabs working together with a group of companies including Motorola.
DOCSIS 3.0 allow cable Internet providers to make use of the extra capacity provided through channel-bonding technology so that they can offer ultra-fast broadband services. What channel bonding does is to combine smaller parallel data pipes into a large single broadband conduit. Just imagine when you combine four single channels, each providing around 40 Mbps of data, you get a theoretical maximum output of 160 Mbps; the throughput from the Motorola SB6121.
That’s why most users reported an enormous surge in the speed when they switch over to the SB6121; as what was found when doing the research for this Motorola SB6121 review. Many users reported that their download speed jumped to an astounding speed of around 20 to 30 Mbps.
Right now, due to the technical limitations, cable providers can only provide a maximum of around 50 Mbps of downstream data throughput. However moving forward as the manufacturers overcome those limitations, the DOCSIS 3.0 specifications will enable the cable Internet providers to continue to improve the speed of their networks.
What’s in the Package and Installation:
Inside the package you get the Motorola SURFboard SB6121 modem itself together with an Ethernet cable and an installation sheet. Installing the Motorola SB6121 is a relatively straight forward affair as it is truly plug and play. If you are signed up with Comcast, then you will need to provide them with your Motorola SB6121‘s MAC address to activate the modem.Get more details on the SB6121 Surfboard Specs here.
Motorola Surfboard SB6121 Performance:
Compared to my previous modem, all I could say is just WOW! I just couldn’t believe the speed I could get from the SB6121. The response is almost instantaneous and the gaming speed is superb. I also found similar results from other users on my research for this SB6121 review.
Pros and Cons of the Motorola SB6121:
Cons:
In researching initially for my own purchase and then this Motorola SB6121 review, I found that the Motorola SB6121 does not have many cons. The one thing that I felt was that the SB6121 ran a little bit warm but this was easily solved by placing it in a ventilated place. The MAC address was also a tad too tiny for my eyes and I had to get my young nephew to read it out to me. However once you have activated the modem, you don’t have to worry about it anymore.
Pros:
It is very, very fast Attractive design It is small and compact Good indicator lights It is very simple to set up. Basically plug it in, provide the Mac Address to Comcast and off you go with the superfast speed
If you are thinking of upgrading your old modem to maximize the bandwidth usage that you have paid for, then I would highly recommend you buy SB6121. If you also have been renting your existing modem, it should be a further impetus for you to buy your own Motorola SB6121 as it will save you money in the long run.
With DOCSIS 3.0, you are also buying into the future and you will get faster speed as the providers upgrade the technology at their end. Upgrade or move to the Motorola SB6121 for that experience that you are looking for.
